I've helped with NSAS for several years and it is far from a fund raising event. This year, as Michael said, there's a large extra expense for the venue, which threatens to come out of the organizer's pocket.

sounds a bit like Paul Butler saying "We did not chop those trees down."

1.  I'm not sure he actually said that.
2.  Just not that funny.

I think it's time to let this one go.

Hi Gang,

Just heard from Michael Jackson (aka MJ, the NSAS organizer).

I guess Marcus and TAY are coming up in the world because MJ has told us that TAY will have a reserved seating section in the NSAS/NASW event this Sunday at UW’s Kane Hall. Hopefully it will be close enough to the front that the preponderance of elderly and infirm TAYers will be able to see and hear the presenters :)

So come and sit in the TAY seating area (while the limited reserved seats are available) and renew old TAY acquaintances and put faces to new ones. It’s gonna be fun :)

You know, almost every year on these things we hear from someone that was really smart; someone that knew a LOT about snow safety, and yet  messed up and got into a BAD avalanche where folks were badly injured. They come to teach what they did wrong so we won’t make the same mistakes. To me, hearing that one speaker each year is worth far more than the cost of admission and the day of time.

Some time ago it was Sam Kavanagh of “A Dozen More Turns” fame. Sam almost bled out with a broken femur, ultimate lost the leg and lost his best friend who had a PHD in Snow Safety!! Then we had Dan Otter , a savvy Crystal Patroller that almost bled out with internal injuries on Kendall Peak in Snoqualmie Pass in April of 2010. These people have HUGE, life altering messages to give back to us if we’ll only take the time to listen.

These types of really smart people that messed up somewhere along the line make me think often about Jill Fredston’s quote (in my sig line below).

Sunday we will have the very unique opportunity to hear two of our own, Marcus Engley and Roger Strong. These are smart, talented guys; Marcus is in Seattle Mountain Rescue (and has the dubious distinction of being the owner of TAY :)) and Roger is a sponsored professional outdoor athlete . They’re going to tell us what they did wrong and what they did right when they were caught in the Phantom Slide in April of 2011 in which 5 were entrapped, 3 injuried, 2 very badly. I would certainly not want to miss their messages.

In addition, many of us are going to brown bag it for lunch rather than try to go off campus for lunch. MJ says that while we can’t eat in the meeting hall, we can circle-the-wagons in the adjoining Foyer so we can continue our kibitzing over lunch there.

So if you haven’t got you ticket yet, now’s the time. They will be $45 if you wait and buy them at the door. They are $35 if you buy them in advance direct through brown paper tickets, or only 30 frogpelts if you get the TAY discount by buying in advance in accordance with the instructions at the top of this thread.

Why not do it now so you don’t forget, and we’ll see you Sunday. ;)
