TLT5 Mountain Stiff Enough? was created by ryanb
Are any of you using the non carbon cuff TLT5 Mountains as your go to touring boot and finding that they are stiff enough to handle PNW conditions well? Or have tried them and found them inadequate?

The carbon cuff performance version gets great reviews from nearly everyone but the cheaper Mountain version seems to be dismiss by the charging crowd. I'm wondering if they are good enough for people who don't huck but do tour in heavy snow, with an overnight pack etc.

I'm about 180 lbs without gear and mostly tour on 175 88 mm underfoot black diamond voodoo's but will probably add a bigger ski in the ~180mmx95-112mm underfoot range (something like the coomback or voile vector or charger) eventually. I'm currently happy with scarpa spirit 4's with the soft tongue for the downs but the weight and range of motion of the tlt5's is attractive.

This may not help any, but with the TLT5P I tour 95% of the time without the tongue. Even with big touring skis (105+waist) I find them a little too stiff for most b/c conditions with the tongue in.

I toured with the Scarpa Spirit 4 for awhile then made the switch to the Scarpa Maestrale.  I wear a 30.5 boot and was able to drop 1 pound per boot by making the switch to the Maestrale.  I tour with the K2 Sidestash and Voile Vector BC and the boots handle the skis easily. I have a Scarpa "foot" so my choices are more limited. You may be fortunate to fit comfortably in various boots. Here's a boot review from Wildsnow:

Spend more money to get the TLT5P, spend less on the skis.  The Performance will make any ski work much better than any other boot.  Mine are 297mm and my tlt4 are 301, luckily my speed bindings were mounted with heel adjustment far back so no remount. I am not paid by Dynafit, I just love the boots.

Or wait until Fall for these:

Good info. If I decide to upgrade someday to the 5s from my tlt4s is there any chance dynafit uses identical measurements for all their boots so that my old TLT bindings won't have to be reset?

I've used the TLT5 Mountain for over 100 days, everything from Nordic Ski Patrol with Karhu Guides (up to 13 miles/day) and Vertical STs to my above Paradise skiing on 187 Manaslus and 178 Seven Summits (Muir Snowfield, Paradise Glacier, 9-1-1 in the back bowl) in powder, breakable crust, and corn; I love them; I rarely use the tongues--they are stiff enough without the tongues, a little to stiff with the tongues for me; of course I only weigh 230 lbs soaking wet ...
