The year before the expansion got in they changed the one ride pass price from 10 bucks to 20 because they were pissed off about the challenges against the expansion and so felt that if envoirenmentalists wanted to hamper their plans then all bc skiers were the enemy.
So now there is not even a one ride pass.
This is the sad mentality of corporate level minds. Instead of embracing the bc community they instead alienate it. Instead of trying to promote the great potential they try to diminish it or ignore it.
Will the new expansion lead to a sell out by the current ownership to a larger corporate entity now that everything is in place to promote a bigger return for their initial investments? I decline to speculate, as the reality is almost non-debateable.
As for the hike from the base to the pristine wilderness of hogback, suck it up at least they can't stop you from heading that way OR CAN THEY?
The good thing about it all is that with the new high camp lodge it's quite civilized to hike and ski and catch a warm up there.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I believe the WP website says that the high camp lodge hasn't been completed yet, but does anyone know differently? I suppose it could be nice to yoyo the BC, then have lunch/tea, followed by some more yoyoing - a true gentleman's way of BC skiing =).

Cheers.

In a post on 2/14/09 Fibro wrote quote] It is such a large area that as long as there are people to set an example in what are good common sense approaches to adventure skiing in the wilderness we will all benefit in some way from the expansion.[end quote.

You obviously are having some second thoughts???? Are you absolutely sure that the increase in one-way ticket price was retaliation against BC skiers as you state or is that just your conjecture or hearsay? I for one would love to hear WP management reasons before I accept that as a fact.

Just as Snowwolf was castigated for inferring some environmentalist were kooks and nazis( in the internet sense), nobody seems to mind when corporations and their virtues are constantly maligned on this website and the capital system( a fair rate of return on capital investment and risk) upon which we all rely for our employment, social welfare system and public projects( even state and government workers rely upon the taxes paid by corporations)is the constant source of unsubstantiated accusations and rantings about corporate greed.

Do you Fibro work for a corporation... and if so are they greedy and evil???Just asking?

I think DavidG makes a key point - be sure to let them know if you would like a reinstatement of the one-ride deal. If enough folks ping them on this, they may realize that they have an issue that could sour folks on the place, including via negative word-of-mouth. Corporations do tend to pay attention to what customers and potential customers think of them. And believe it or not, they often have a "service orientation" toward the community, though in this case they may also be thinking about managing their risks. Running a business always involves balancing competing factors. If you don't add your voice to their mix of considerations, don't expect them to take you into account. But if you ping them with a bunch of vitriol about the "the sad state of the coporate mind," you may not get far... If you happen to ride their lifts when not touring, be sure to let them know that too.

FWIW: I skiied at WP on 12/10 -- here are some things I observed at that time:

1) The RFID scanner system is only at the base -- no scanners or ticket checking on the Paradise basin chairs on that day.
2) The new lodge was still under construction -- it is nice enough. -- When I asked about food availblity once completed, the folks working there indicated that they wouldn't be able to offer anything beyond "snacks" until they secured a water supply sufficient to support a sprinker system in the kitchen. Which certainly isn't going to happen this season and maybe never.
3) The runs off the 1st chair are very mellow green runs.
4) The runs off the "Coliour Express" are enjoyable, moderate runs -- nothing steep. Of course the 22 inches new in the prior two days may have skewed my perception favorably.

In terms of the selling 1 ride tickets -- I don't think the issue here is backcountry skiers per se -- I think the concern is about cheapskate alpine skiers trying to ski all day for the price of one ride.

If WP was to install a RFID gate on the "Coliour Express", I think that would eliminate much of that problem as the 1st new lift is too flat to be of interest to ski bums and I don't think they run the Paraside / chair 4 much anymore with the expansion area open. I'm sure that financially it makes a lot more sense to them to eliminate one ride tickets than it does to install an additional RFID gate. If they ever end up doing this it would be to do something like adding a vertical tracker system like Stevens.

In meantime, those lokiing to skin up could follow the Pacific Crest Trail route -- which leaves the highway from the easternm end of the parking area ans stays outside the Special User Permit area.
