I weigh 110 Kg and I've been skiing with Dynafits since 1990. Currently I ski the Atomic Big Daddy and the Fischer Watea, both 192 cm.
Why do people think that Dynafits may not be robust enough?

Cheers,
Alex

I for one was worried about the tiny hole pattern on the dynafit bindings relative to the width of the skis. Cranking a turn on harder snow on a super wide ski would put much more torque on the binding than if the same turn was made on a narrow width ski, so I worried about the binding pulling out. I have dynaduke plates, which have a rather wide pattern, on both of my setups, and I think it helps a little, but I don't really even know if it would have been a problem in the first place.

Frankly I think a lot of the worry has to due with Dynafits almost total lack of marketing targeted at the freeride segment. If they had some photos of people hitting cliffs on dynafits, or maybe a little webisode video or something, I bet people would get more comfortable with the idea of dynafits as a freeride binding in a hurry. Maybe dynafit could actually beef up their heel post's and sell wider brakes while they're at it...

Dynafits work great for some skier types but poorly for others. For most of us on TAY they are just fine as we get out, hike around, and ski the pow. I bet if you asked around most of us dont "huck" and prefer face shots instead. Sure we might drop 5-10 footers but that really isnt much. Now head to TGR guys who are dropping much larger 20-30 footers and it is just a lot of stress on those two little pins. Also if you were dropping even 10 footers (often) i would start worrying about fatigue on those pins.

I have in fact seen a pair of dynafit comforts have a pin broken due to stress from repeated abuse. For me dynafits are awesome and work wonders. But start mixing in more freeride and it can get a little bit sketchy.

Thats my opinion at least.

FWIW, A brake installed (if you can bend them wide enough) lets your boot rest on it as well as the pins...

I took plenty of 10-20-30-ft-ish airs on Dynafits (only into deep deep pow) and never broke anything. I broke plenty of pins skiing hardpack at Alpy I also broke the metal pieces below the plastic heel plate on Speeds/Classics while skiing them at Alpy. I think all my breakages came from skiing resort hardpack: bumps on Upper International or the Traverse back into the resort from the Alpy BC. Mofro is the mang.
