I've been happy with my Dakine Pro II. I have the older model (from like 2006) and find it has everything i need. I took a look at the new model and its got some improvements over mine. Has plenty of room for a basic day pack. Shovel, probe, and shovel handle fit nice inside in their own compartment. Other compartment can hold an extra fleece, 3-4 water bottles, snacks, and skins. Has compression straps that can hold skins nicely for yoyoing. And has the spot for ice ax on the side (or the shovel handle). Also has a pocket on the waiste strap for camera if you want.
The new model changes the shovel compartment a bit so the blade is on the outside and handles/probes on the inside. Not a major complaint but i do see an added benifit there! Also let syou vertical carry snowboards (my model might...dont honestly know, dont snowboard so meh) Also looks like the added main compartment access via the back which is nice if you have skis/board on pack.
It doesnt hold to much extra stuff but for day touring its not bad. For longer tours where you might need crampons you might find space limited. But i have a Eiger 35 (i believe it is) that i use for longer days like that.
Really though everyone will find different packs to be suitable or not suitable. just got to go to the stores and try them on and take a look at em to know what ya like!

x2. Or their Borea. Handle the packs and you know they weren't made for a price point...
Or just shop REI for a new import every year..

try this:
www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?Mens/Packs/Arrakis-40
expensive as hell, but probably the last pack you will ever buy!

Ha, that 'Teryx is interesting! No board carry, but should would fit a split... If I really get to use this for say 20 years - it may be worth it. May swing by Marmot to see if they have it. But I am afraid the plastic parts would deteriorate and break. Also, weather 'resistant' is not 'proof.' And just imagine what wonder fabrics and materials we may have in *just* 10 years!
The BCA - can I just buy the airbag and jerry-rig to another pack? This might be worth trying.
I hope I like the Gregory that should be coming in a day or two. Not least - lifetime warranty sounds great. If not - then all bets are off, there are several great ideas here
Thank you all for the suggestions!

Not quite that easy. The whole system is built into the back. its got (i believe it is) CO2 cartridge in it with tubing and crap. Besides id rather have something specifically designed for the pack when i know the only time ill be pulling the rip cord is when i've set off a slide.

I would have to agree. It would be pretty bad if I pull the cord (yes, I saw there is a refillable cartridge) and the airbag flies away after deploying - leaving me in the slide!
