Dream day pack - does it exist? was created by lernr
My 'dream' BC day pack would have these features:
  • ski + snowboard carry: this one is a major requirement
  • mesh / stretch side pockets for wet skins when yo-yoing
  • shovel carry
  • multiple + easy access options: side, top, etc.
  • a couple of compartments: e.g. for small things, for wet things, etc.
  • solid construction + sturdy materials (even if heavier)
  • waterproof top would be nice
  • back side: I'd rather have the old lightweight plastic with holes (Osprey had it some 9 years ago) than the *newer* foam backs that soak sweat  >:(
  • ice axe loops
  • I am not even sure about plastic buckles - mine are starting to break. How about (Ti)  D-rings or something?
  • Ideally, I'd like to have and use this for a very long time
  • hydration pocket not a must but could be useful
  • sternum and hip straps: may be minimalistic, and not critical
  • cherry on top: avalung compatible

So does this thing exist?

Anyone to suggest additional requirements?

My current pack is Osprey Helios 26 and it's falling apart after 8 years - plastic parts breaking, webbing tearing...

I don't think I've ever seen a satisfactory combination of these features. Is this asking for too much? There must be others like me who could use something like this?

I'd consider suggestions for custom sourcing - please advise if you can!

Thank you!
Ivo

all except the snowboard carry: Dyanfit Manaslu pack; best ski pack I've had; best ski carrying method, too. Sorry 'bout the 'board.

Thank you for the tip, I'll check it out.
(I have an old split board too so I could carry it in ski mode, I guess. Too bad I am gaga about the ride of my new non-split but rocker-ed board)

Here's my dream pack, kinda the opposite of what you describe.   Very simple drybag with straps, no hydration pocket, no avalung, no foam, one access option (top). It does have ice ax loops, is totally waterproof, and lots of loops for setting up your own ski/board/skin attachment system.
340grams vs 1.15kg for the Helios 26 or 1.4kg for the Manaslu. Less expensive too. :-)

Guess that's why there are so many different pieces of the same gear, many different desires?

Hi Silas -

this looks interesting! I am totally open to trying it.

Need to figure out what attachment systems to use though :) And also not sure how it would feel on my back without any suspension and padding - so I would need to load it up and walk about a bit.

I did order a Gregory Targhee today - had good reviews. If I don't like it, then I may try Mammut Nirvana and this OR. May stop by Marmot to see if they have it in stock. Also, I see there is a person on TGR that's called a "custom backpack genius" producing better than mass-market packs - has anyone ordered from him?

expensive as hell, but probably the last pack you will ever buy!
