I'm pretty sure that any one who authored content of any sort would be upset if someone scanned it and put it on the net.

I don't know the copyright ramifications, but, respectfully, I think that you should delete your post.

I would never have even considered posting such an offer (and furthermore note that my offer was explicitly conditioned on "If Rainer approves"), but then I read the author's post, excerpted below:

The negative experience was "no reprint": Book buyers go suck eggs.

As Mr. Beckey said: "Writing a guidebook is like having a baby: There's no money in it." Personally, I ALWAYS check out Half-Price Books and try to buy my book. Many of my friends would like a copy and when I find one, I give it away.

BTW, more generally, almost all of the content that I have authored is available on the net:

Right on.

But maybe you should have a private conversation with him?  Now you've put him in a kind of a spot.  Just because all of you're stuff is on the web doesn't mean that others want all of theirs on the web.

He also said that there will be another printing, so your offer seems a little lame.

Greetings Fellow Skiers!
Yesterday I received a call from the Mountaineers, Books that they will soon have, deus ex machina, 320 copies of "100 Classic Backcountry ski...etc" in their warehouse. Apparantly small-print runs are now technically feasible. My contact stated that the price will be $21.95 and the book will be available at all their traditional outlets. This will be not be a new edition; simply another printing. At this time I do not have any plans to bring a new edition into being. If there is anyone out there contemplating doing a project like this, I'd be happy to provide any assistance. Regards, Rainer

He can simply ignore my post entirely, and thereby no pdf files will be made available.

Greetings to ya all! The internet is raising havoc with authors and publishers. Cool! Chaos is king! "Backcountry Skiing...etc. was published in 1986. When The Publisher declined to reprint the Book once all available copies had been sold (1991,) I stated publicly that interested parties should feel free to "Xerox the damn thing". The thing being that book ONLY. These books are not about money: They are about the need for information, love of the sport and of writing, and yes, ego.
When "100 Classic Backcountry...etc." went out of print, the Publisher sent me a letter returning the copyright to me per our contract. Recently, The Publisher advised me that they had, without my permission, re- printed 300 copies of The Book. OOOPS! Ya gotta laugh. They apologized. I think that the most positive take on this is to overlook the mistake, sell the books, and move on. I don't think the common good is served by piracy, even though it is common practice. Check out John Baldwin's "Exploring the Coast Mountains on Skis". Pirating books like this would discourage fabulous efforts of this kind. Finally, I'm donating the proceeds from this print run to Friends of NWAC. RB

I didn't know that ego was a legitimate motivation for these things. Thanks for the beta, Rainer. I better get to writing! :)
