In a well regarded publication, "Mountaineering-Freedom of the hills", the text states that uphill traveling persons have the right of way on a trail. Ski area responsibility codes say "yield to uphill traffic". That safety rule rarely gets respected by the dipsh*ts that frequent ski areas.

I was always taught even from an early age that uphill traffic had the right away. And as i've encounter it is way asier to stop, step aside, and then start up again going downhill than to stop, wait, and have to start again going uphill. Once i'm in "the zone" going up i hate to stop for things out side of my wanting to take a break.

I have done my fair share of been going uphill and letting downhill traffic go by me or to take a breather for a sec and let the guy huffing and puffing uphill go by real quick.

Though in my experience larger groups it is often better to just get out of their way if possible whether uphill or downhill for 2 reasons (my own reasons) A) it can be hard to get 5+ off out of a group of 1-3 peoples way. Sometimes numbers make it better for the smaller group to step aside (more applicable ot trail hiking than skiing though) and B) its an excuse to catch my breath :)

I think the key is to just be considerate to others. if its way easier for you to move aside then thats what i will do. If i can move aside and yeild to the uphill then i will.

Good point and I think I have pulled aside to let large groups pass down hill as well, BUT.
The problem yesterday was that the RMI train where not showing any consideration nor giving anybody a chance to make a decision to let them go first.. They were charging and groups of tourists and families where literally jumping out of their way.
As I said I was shocked by their behaviour and even  thought about complaining to RMI but didn't.

I like to be the one who steps off and lets others pass when being overtaken or meeting on the trail. My theory is I will choose a less impactful wide spot, rock, or patch of gravel to roost on than they might.  Maybe uphill right of way should be reconsidered at a place as crowded as Paradise.  I don't mean to defend RMI, who I've also seen behave arrogantly, but from a resource protection 'standpoint', doesn't it make more sense for smaller parties to yield to larger ones on trails?

Only you know the truth to that Keith! I don't ski at most ski areas anymore because of the dipsh*t factor. Hence the bitterness.
