Good point and I think I have pulled aside to let large groups pass down hill as well, BUT.
The problem yesterday was that the RMI train where not showing any consideration nor giving anybody a chance to make a decision to let them go first.. They were charging and groups of tourists and families where literally jumping out of their way.
As I said I was shocked by their behaviour and even  thought about complaining to RMI but didn't.

in your case no they were wrong. I was speaking more of general rules i go by. Unless the guide was leading the group though i don't think you can straight up blame RMI. Unless they specifically tell their clients to give uphill traffic the right away? (im not to familiar with RMI other than seeing their groups around)

My brain works in strange ways sometimes.  When I read Scotsman's post I couldn't help thinking of this film clip showing two parties meeting on a narrow trail (30 seconds in). The downhill party claims the right of way, as you can see.   ;) ;) ;)

Forth Eorlingas!

Actually Lowell, it was just like that. :D

Here is my take on this -- I think dealing with a larger group is sort of like dealing with a ferry boat or cargo ship while sea-kayaking.   Legally a sea-kayak has the right of way over any motorized vessel -- but as a practical manner -- the large vessels are far less manoverable -- and as I like to think about -- they might not even notice if they ran over me.

Similarly -- it is far easier a solo hiker moving uphill to step aside and allow a large group to pass than it is for a group to break pace all find seperate places off the trail to stand aside and all wait while one uphill hiker hikes past at a typically slower pace.

As someone wishing to avoid injury -- I quickly step aside to avoid being overrun by a "run-away train",  as a fat assed lazy hiker -- I typically enjoy the extra bit of rest on the way up when I step aside to let a group pass and take it as an opportunity to enjoy the view.

Disagree, of course you can blame RMI. Their guides where leading the group and their clients where following like sheep.
It's RMI's responsibility to teach etiquette and mountain protocol.

What? Soggy bottom? Guilty as charged? I'm glad I have some stimulating interaction on the internet right now. Pretty damn boring browsing as of late. Yeah, sucks to be me Keith, only rode lifts in Europe last year. Not a one over here. Damn, I'm so uppity I can't even stand myself. One word for this year though...ETEC. Care to join?

I have skied at Crystal with at least 20 people who are regular contributors to this forum--hence my remark, "Present company excluded..?" I was not necessarily referring to myself. I do not consider them "dipsh*ts" (defn: foolish or contemptible persons) merely for frequenting ski areas. A person should have to earn that distinction based on behavior. But since we live in a America you are free to harbor whatever bigotry you wish. About your other remarks, I am tending to agree.

I don't know what an ETEC is but if you're asking me to join with you I will have to demur.

I hear you but respectfully disagree. There are established protocols for travel and if the strong or majority can unilateraly choose to break to rules then the minority will be crushed to turn it into a political analogy. ;)
