What are the details for either Crystal Fest or the festival on Mt. Hood for May 3? I have been backcountry skiing for two seasons, have taken the avy class and have all BC gear. I am intersted in attending one of these two events, but do not know where I would meet up with people. I live in Portland, and am excited to meet other backcountry skiers. I just spent four days in the WAllowas in early April and had a blast. You can email me at chick_j at hotmail dot com

Crystalfest, is a day of unstructured fun for all. Show up at Crystal mountain parking lot some time around 9 am (8 will be a tad on the early side probably and 10 will be on the later side, but come when you want) and look for the heaps of people, say hi and start skinning uphill with new friends.
No promises about this year, in years past there have been between 100 and 150 people, plus dogs, kids, grills, cookies and other treats. We stop at about the Campbell Basin lodge or somewhere near there to eat, hang out, ski and waste the day away. Someone brought duct tape and a sharpie and faces were put to screen names.
This is about as much organization as has typically happened. No sign up sheets, RSVPs or anything.
I will put a shout out around the middle of next week to see if anyone else is coming. So far, I know a bunch of people will be missing it for the first time in years. :'(
Hopefully some I won't be alone in parkinglot

I'll volunteer to drive the TAY Van Pool from the North Seattle area.  Can take 8 Pass. and all gear.  I'll chip in for the keg, too. PM me for a ride.

Kids, dogs, spouses welcome.

I plan to be there with a first-timer and a couple friends who probably aren't TAY post readers.  Maybe more if the sun's out.

By the way, if you haven't heard, there's a new-ish sherrif in town.  Not a Sherrif actually, but a very dedicated FS law enforcement officer.  He's got a nose for impaired drivers as many Crystal regulars can attest, so even though it's an unlikely problem, plan to not be one!  And plan to slow down for that 20mph sign.

Also, I don't think his patrol is limited to the roads.  So don't be too offended if somebody shows up because this fairly public discussion of beverages draws attention of open container law zealots.  Better to keep that kind of thing on the down-low.
