The honest truth, Bernie Madoff ruined more lives with his decision making. Shane was a talented human being in an unforgiving environment and a visionary for where you could go with skis on a mountain.
He did this, because he believed he could it. Red Bull benefited from his vision and used Shane's accomplishments to help perpetuate an image of what happens when you drink it.
I feel sad that the mountains we love to play in, give us a limited margin for error. That makes 99 out of 100 bad odds if you are out there everytime you go skiing.
Everyone has a different take home, I am a father, husband, skialpinist, and a guide, who believed that as you move through life you perception of what is important changes. How you feel about Shane's tragedy is personal, and may not be shared by the next person.
I wish everyone on this forum to hold that space for the different perspectives and let everyone respect Shane in their own way. I certainly will.

Good books on the subject of life and death in the mountains (climbing being the sport, but skiing fits too):
On the Ridge Between Life and Death: A Climbing Life Reexamined
,
Where the mountain casts its shadow

A good film on the topic of the psychology of the extreme athlete is "20 Seconds of Joy", the story of Katrina Hollekim. It was at the 2007 Banff Film Festival. She went splat BASE-jumping, but lived to tell about it...I think she "streamered" her canopy, so it slowed her down from grounding out at terminal velocity. She is one tough mama!

Can I please ask that this thread die?? It is obvious to me that none of you knew Shane and this thread went from giving respect to a fellow skier to judging and criticizing a single moment in a long life. I have strayed far from anything said about Shane since it happened and now through comments on this thread it brings it all back. Please have respect for a life well lived and I ask that if you want to continue this thread please do so elsewhere while also including the hundreds of names of fallen skiers, climbers, base jumpers, and others that have lost their lives doing what they loved. Although I will never be able to call him a friend I can say that I knew Shane and was personally inspired by his love of life and all I ask is for his respect. Thanks
