Dynafit Race Boots-$1400??

My old Dynafit TLT4 boots have been getting worn out and I've been looking for a replacement. The other day I ordered a pair of Scarpa F1s. Based on the shop fit, I think they'll ski as well as the TLT4s, but they'll tour much better, thanks to the freely hinged cuff developed for rando racing.

I'm going the same way, my F1's arrived via ups today!

Over the last few weeks I've sold off all tele gear (heavy & light) and heavy AT skis/bindings. I'm left with a light mid-fat, a light skinny mountaineer and a wide waxless  - all with Dynafit TLT's. If the F1 are as supportive as I think they will be, I may sell my mega-rides as well.

After weighting the tele boots for shipping, all 3 either weighed more or the same as the Mega-rides. The F1 are a full pound (25%) lighter yet.  My style is more finesse than power, so there's no need for the big gear anyway.

However, despite my favoring the light weight gear, there is definitely a limit on paying for high-tech material, and current carbon fiber stuff is way past what I'll fork over.

Are you planning on the shims as described here by Lou Dawson?

I'll be interested to hear how these boots work out. The owner of a hut I visited in Canada a few years ago had a pair and I believe he liked them.

I’ve used the F1 (both stock and heavily modified), TLT4 (pretty much stock), and MLT4 (in various modified forms, never stock). I’ve also used the Matrix, F3, and Zzero4 C-TF, but those are another class of boots altogether.

The F1 and TLT4 are very similar for skiing performance.
For the up, the F1 has the advantage for winter skinning because of the bellows.
But for spring & summer ski mountaineering, I prefer the TLT4 because of its sculpted non-DIN boot sole, and because the F1 lever can be kind of a pain when climbing/scrambling (although I understand the most recent version is better in this regard) plus on longer trips if the lever breaks, it’s skiable only after some clever work with Voile straps, duct tape, etc.

Right now I’m going with Zzero4 C-TF for pretty much everything (except for racing, training, and tours where the up is more than the down, but which I use a heavily modified F1). The deciding factor was that I was just barely able to downsize shells, so it’s very light for me compared to other more touring-oriented boots. Plus paired with the Dynafit Manaslu, the soft snow performance is astounding, yet it’s still a very light package.
I was thinking about getting a Zzero3 for spring & summer, but I’m wondering if the insanely light DyNA might be usable as an all-around ski boot (as opposed to just race-day shoe).

Garth - the F1's came with 2 sets of shims, the main forefoot shim is the "Dynashim" that fits into the crampon slot. You can then pull them to put in the crampon. Pretty sweet improvement to the system.

For me, most of the alpine touring boots currently on the market are too heavy and stiff. Remember in the 1990s how we said the telemarkers were trying to reinvent alpine skiing with their beefy gear? Now alpine touring is reinventing lift skiing with gear that is beefier than you need to ski in the backcountry. At least that's my opinion.

The other day I ordered a pair of Scarpa F1s. I think they'll ski as well as the TLT4s, but they'll tour much better, thanks to the freely hinged cuff developed for rando racing.

Agreed on the assessment of the AT marketing plan, I assume that even though the market has grown for AT it probably is difficult to support only lighter AT boots and more lucrative to attract a larger market, those who have cash want the sidecountry/BC/AT option, at least look like it in the lift lines.

One innovation that I did see is at least one style of Black Diamonds new AT boots have interchangeable soles, not new you say!
But they are Dynafit compatible interchangeable soles!  That is a grand idea!

OMG-It is going to be rough to keep up with Lowell since he's going to get F-1 boots.

I've been shopping for boots recently. I think Scarpa is also coming out with a carbon fiber race boot next year that will cost $1200.

Here they are.
