Weren't those boots featured in the Neiman-Marcus "Dream Gifts" Christmas catalogue? You know, on the same page as the his/hers heli-ski month and the Bentley with the personalized interior?

I hadn't seen those but I did see a pr of the Piere Gignoux on the Ricksters feet. real trick stuff. Ida hijacked them but his feet are too small.

I've been shopping for boots recently. I think Scarpa is also coming out with a carbon fiber race boot next year that will cost $1200. Call me old-fashioned but those prices are crazy.
Still, I think it's cool that rando racing is driving the real innovations in alpine touring right now. For me, most of the alpine touring boots currently on the market are too heavy and stiff. Remember in the 1990s how we said the telemarkers were trying to reinvent alpine skiing with their beefy gear? Now alpine touring is reinventing lift skiing with gear that is beefier than you need to ski in the backcountry. At least that's my opinion.
It's great that rando racing is providing an alternative. My old Dynafit TLT4 boots have been getting worn out and I've been looking for a replacement. The other day I ordered a pair of Scarpa F1s. Based on the shop fit, I think they'll ski as well as the TLT4s, but they'll tour much better, thanks to the freely hinged cuff developed for rando racing. A few years ago, I modified some Dynafit MLT boots for long distance tours. I liked them because of the fore-aft range of motion for touring. The rando racing manufacturers are now building boots that are way better than what I came up with. I'm hoping the F1s will replace both my TLT4s and my MLTs. It seems like a good bet.
As for the ultra-pricey rando boots, I think we're in a market like the personal computer market was several years ago. Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and you'll pay a premium to get the latest thing. For cheapskates like me, it's best to buy a year (or three) behind the bleeding edge. In a few years, if we're lucky, really light and versatile AT boots will be more of a commodity.

I agree with you that ski gear seems to be going in two different directions. Superlight carbon randonne gear( boots such as these and superlight race dynafits and carbon fiber skis) and then fatter and fatter skis with beefier boots and bindings. ( 130mm waist rockered skis , Dukes and BD's boot line).
Frankly , I find both ends of the spectrum sexy. I like the fat stuff just as much as I appreciate the skinny stuff. It's the bit in the middle that I can't get excited about!
