I-90 Closed for Epic Snowfall!

Faceshots below the quad at 2 pm yesterday made it seem pretty deep.

Just take a gander at the Alpental telemetry for the story: it shows precip for every hour since 1500hrs on the 28th! A total of 3.89 inches continuously over 71 hours, more than an inch a day for three days and counting. No amount of equipment/staff/funding can keep up with that. The only way to avoid closure would be a multi-billion dollar elevated road or tunnel. We are witnessing (albeit remotely) nature doing her thing, so just stand back an enjoy the show cause it looks like it won't be over for a while yet!

WADOT reports a closure for the next 24 hours at least. They are saying that they won't be able to evaluate until 0900 on 2/1 to even make a guess. With more in the forecast who knows when they will be able to get it open again. Wow. I wonder what will open at Alpental when they finally get the road open.

The camera has snow on it, some of it is obscuring the view in a way that makes it look like it's pointing at a peak or something.... It is actually pointing in the normal direction for that camera.

During some of my downtime while the pass is closed I read " The White Cascade". An intresting account of the Wellington avalanche. One of the conclusions about the incident still rings true almost a 100 years later. Somtimes man and all his technology cannot overpower the forces of nature.
