Those are all good things to think about. I don't think I will be digging 9 foot pits on my short weekend trips. I guess I will just keep doing more mellow lines for a while this season.
I did like the name "halloween layer" in the article. I wonder if we kept a running trip report for popular areas like Snoqualomie or Stevens for people to come up with commonly accepted names for the crusts in the snowpack if that would be helpful? Dates are good for the names too, but I know I would pay more attention to the halloween layer just because it sounds mean.

It really is amazing that the DOT does not seem to be on top of the snow situation. I grew up in Colorado where they could keep several mountain passes open on I-70 during any given storm, yet WSDOT can't keep one pass open. What gives?
