I70 never closes  ::)

updated 9:59 p.m. PT, Mon., Dec. 31, 2007
DENVER - Wind-whipped snow and avalanche danger closed the main highway through the Colorado mountains for most of Monday, stranding hundreds of travelers.

Portions of a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 70 — the main route between Denver and some of the state's biggest ski resorts — were shut down in both directions from around 5 p.m. Sunday until about 4 p.m. Monday.

The long delay had some travelers contemplating the prospect of welcoming the new year on a cot in a shelter. More than 2,000 spent Sunday night in shelters, but the Red Cross closed all its shelters Monday after traffic started moving.

Shortly after they opened the pass an avalanche hit the westbound lanes near Lake Keechelus (snowshed area) blocking traffic again. I was checking the DOT cam and saw this photo eastbound. Not a good sign when you see people walking on the highway.....

Looks like those guys are walking away from their car that got avalanched....

I think this occurred as well since the pass report states westbound blocked at exit 54. Looks like another LONG closure after a very short opening.

Wow. That looks *really* bad. I bet they re-close it ASAP for a very long time....

MP 54 is the last westbound exit before Denny Ck though, so they'd have to close it there. Now it says:

Westbound traffic is delayed at milepost 54 near Hyak and milepost 84 near Cle Elum due to a natural slide that occurred near milepost 51. WSDOT crew is on scene working to assess the exent of the slide.
