The Cascade Crest show opens with a "virtual-reality" fly-over of the crest from Mt Baker to Mt Rainier, using Google Earth.

Lowell, does watching this this qualify as armchair skiing?

What elevation setting did you finally choose for GE? When I was fiddling around with the file I made myself air sick by setting the elevation too low. The field of view would rotate rapidly with each turn of the route, and I would loose my orientation too. Too high an elevation did not show the details however. There were some other settings too.

Either that, or armchair flying.

I do the overflight at about 34,000 meters. Pretty high. At this elevation you can see most of the Ptarmigan Traverse on the screen at once. I don't use the GE "play tour" function, but instead I pilot the thing by hand using the joy stick. That makes it easier to synchronize my narration with the image.

One thing I could not figure out is how to make landmarks appear only when you are at a certain elevation. So, I zoom down from space, stop, and then enable the landmarks that I added so you can tell where you are during the overflight. It's a little clunky, but the landmarks make it much easier to visualize where you are.

Last night a mixed group of skiers and outdoor adventurers were at Lowell and Steph's place and we had a chance to see the presentation.  It is wonderful ! The flyover in the beginning provides a great overview of the scope of the adventure.  The images of the early skiers along with Lowell's newer images indicate how strenous and beautiful the journey is.  Some early images of the "diaper ski outwear" are particularly amusing.  If you are curious about what's over that ridge in the distance along the crest or what it looks like with snow, you'll want to see one of the presentations. Thanks Lowell.
