revisited: photos per thread limit

TAY has gradually become my favorite forum for exchanging information about backcountry skiing. Partly because it is local, and partly because of the quality of the discussions. I occasionally visit other ski forums, and there's a remarkable percentage of "Fuggin' Aye, Dude!" posts out there. TAY seems to have more information exchange. I like that.

I also prefer TAY because it happens to be local, and because the "temperment" suits me better, but I don't think it has to do with the fact that only one photo is allowed per thread. More pictures can sometimes add to the information exchange in a way that more verbage cannot, and there are many times when I'd like to see more photos included in a trip report (as opposed to clicking on links) . . . As long as we're not talking about Charles hosting the images, the sticking point seems to be download speed, which is usually not a problem for me, though perhaps it is for others - should have a show of hands of those using dialup connections vs cable/DSL?

I'm kind of with Lowell on this one. The fact is, when I put my TR's together I distill my images down to "the photo that captures the TR" and if I feel like showing other photos, I install a link to my photo page. Others link images directly into posts and that works great too.

This forum is just about the only forum I can tolerate (yes, I'm not impressed with the banter on other sites) and I think it has a lot to do with the need to write about your trip instead of the "easy way out". Kind of like people who like to read The Wall Street Journal vs people who like to read The USA Today (The "McNewspaper").

so, my vote - keep it the same.

(and the little voice inside says that when I'm at work and on T1 line instead of at home on, yes, a dial-up - if more pics are allowed than that would be fine too!)

I like it the way it is now. I don't post any trip reports at all but do enjoy reading them. For the most part I prefer reading the the trips with pictures but I think it cluters up the post if there are to many. I may be biased but Jeff Huber does a really good job of taking advantage of the rules set now. Here is a good example. www.turns-all-year.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB...splay;num=1119741920 .

Aaron

I happen to be recently returned from an area where internet connections are still slow: modem speed at best, in the hundreds of kb per second at worst. While I was away I gave up following other sites which lack an "all text" option, but stuck with this one for all the reasons cited above. What's more, I've got family and friends on dialups scattered around the States and Canada. This is not as rare as one might think; many areas don't have broadband options at any price, and one friend lives in a town which operates wholly (phone and internet) on an experimental satellite hookup, funded by the provincial government. Sometimes I send links to this site. People really do appreciate fast load times.

I also agree with Lowell, as is often the case. There's no denying the appeal of quality photos in a trip report, but I find that many postings on other boards consist almost entirely of photos, with bits of limp prose inserted almost as an afterthought. I'm a visual person, but I really appreciate well-crafted writing (sometimes I believe myself to have achieved this for a moment or two, but these moments are rare). While I do miss the reports from Sky, among others, I also treasure many of those which do appear here. Yeah, it's a challenge to write engagingly, but surely it's no more difficult than, say, telemark skiing.

Perhaps a compromise of some sort: no wider than (600? 800?) pixels, no larger than 50 or 80 kb, no more than (two? three?) photos per thread, with photo privileges limited to the original poster. Would that make enough of a difference to make it worthwhile?
I also agree with Lowell
Second that!

it's a challenge to write engagingly, but surely it's no more difficult than, say, telemark skiing.

This is beautifully worded and wonderfully true. Pictures have always been said to worth a thousand words. What TAY offers is a thousand times more than a bunch of "8 x 10 color glossy photos with circles and arrows and a [mere] paragraph on the back of each one." The quality of this site lies in the text, the testimonials, and the truths. The one photo per thread is a wonderful hook--I've been hooked by the selection(s) of Lowell, Kam, ronj, among others-- to the narratives, poems, and haikus of others. One photo per thread encourages imagination and dreams.

Also, just a note: many TAY folks have noted the increased readability of the NWAC's creative poetic forecasts. Good writing is captivating in and of itself. Keep up the good work!

Nice use of the Arlo Guthrie quote there...
