I have been accused of being a troll. I'm sorry if people find my opinion not to their liking. I tell it like it is. Sometimes people don't like or can't handle honesty. It's not trolling.

I respect others opinions and expect the same from others.
where's the Fremont bridge??

According to the BLM... 2.5% of the lower 48 has been designated "wilderness" with protection from road-building, motorized travel (snowmobiles), etc. This is likely the 'roadless' area to which CW is referring. I'm not sure how looking at the Washington shoreline disputes this fact. Granted there are large swaths of BLM land without this designation... that's where you find the clear cuts, motorcycle trails, cattle grazing, sand dune buggies and the like. Please see

I have to say that this forum is a breath of fresh air on the web... Charles has fostered a great community and we owe it to him to keep it civil.

Charles, thanks for the effort you put in here. I agree with Straka that this forum is a breath of fresh air, with a great signal:noise ratio. You appear to use a light touch, and have attracted a primarily positive, fun, and informative group of folks here. Thanks for that.

And kuharicm - it is indeed a clever bumper sticker.
Hey all

Yes my recall of 2% of the lower 48 being roadless was based on my feeble brain remembering back in the early 70's when The United States Forest Service undertook the "Roadless Area Review and Evaluation" (RARE) studies in an attempt to catalogue possible wilderness areas on National Forest lands. The first RARE study was widely criticized for its inadequacy and a second more detailed and comprehensive study, RARE II, was completed in 1979.

I think it might be a matter of definition
of what is roadless, certainly the Bush 2 government does, reflecting some current issues in Utah for instance but certainly not the only where local economic interests consider 80 yr old horse trails roads so as to disqualify them from possible Wilderness protection. Bandit, I certainly hope you continue to post as your topic reflects important issues that I think must be respectfully but I also hope with passion discussed as both individuals and as a society.

I have enjoyed Mr EDward Abbey’s thoughts on occasion and will leave with this comment of his

The idea of wilderness needs no defense, it only needs defenders.

CW

For everyone's benefit, I will review the actions I took, and actions I did not take, regarding posts in this thread.

Actions I took:
1) Deleted several posts which violated the Terms of Use;
2) Edited one post to remove material which violated the Terms of Use, leaving intact the part of the post which was not in violation (current post #11);
3) Sent 4 TRs instant messages letting specific members know that their post(s) had been deleted/modified, the reason for such action, and steps they could take in the future to help avoid problems, as applicable.

Actions I did not take:
1) Deleting/editing posts because I disagreed with the opinion expressed in them;
2) Deleting/editing posts because the opinion expressed in them was in the minority;
3) Banning a member.

My suggestion to all members of this forum is that if you see a post which contains material which you think is objectionable or in any way in violation of the Trip Reports Terms of Use (
read it here
), please do not take matters into your own hands. Instead, contact the TRs administrator (me - contact link is at the bottom of every TRs page) or one of the moderators with your concerns and let us take it from there.

It will help to keep this forum running smoothly and with the positive atmosphere which the vast majority of members value if all members refrain from making posts which further inflame an already flaming thread. It is sometimes difficult to not react irrationally to irrational posts on an internet forum like the TRs, but there is very little that a "regular" member will be able to do in such a situation other than making things worse. This is why there are administrator/moderators.

Charles
