Eye (Viterous) Floaters in Flat Light? was created by Lahar_Dar
Does anyone else experience floaters? It seems to me that this time of year when light goes flat in town and in the mountains I start seeing them more often. For the lucky ones that don't know, flaoters are protein chains in the eye that can be seen in flat light or white backgrounds. (They look like multi-celled organisms when looking through a microscope.) When you try to focus on them, they just "float" away. Anyway, just wondering how many people, if any, are affected by this and what you have done to minimize the impact these little buggers inflict. (very distracting)

I have a bunch of them, they're constantly distracting. I have a theory that it's either cold weather, cold water, or high altitude that does it. I seemed to have them all of a sudden after living in Quito for a while. The eye doctors say it's normal, "everybody has them," but I doubt they see spots and look through saran wrap all of the time like I do.

I see them from time to time, but not often and/or they're not distracting. I used to see them more often in my teens and twenties than I do now in my forties. Other than giving you a data point that you're not terribly alone, I'm not of much help to you.

I have floaters in both eyes, but they're worse in the left after a series of retinal surgeries a few years back. I've found that the best solution is to cock my head to the right and look through the little fog-free patch in the upper right goggle lens. This strategy also helps me keep an eye on my line.

You learn something new every day. For 40+ years I've noticed this and now I know what it is. Not much help to Lahar_Dar though, I haven't found them distracting my skiing or anything else.

They've been with me since at least elementery school.

There has only been one eye doctor that took a stab at explaining them: They are left over blood vessels that I only used in the womb and no longer need.*

*Seems to me I've also heard that floaters can be a symptom of a torn retina. (though probably not the kind we're talking about here).
