Commuting by bike? was created by gregL
Who's using a bicycle to commute? Seems like another area of commonality between TAY posters . . . I've seen Amar Andalkar and Kelvin Wu on the Burke-Gilman Trail recently. I know Monika and pbelitz are out there. Anyone else?

Trying to say no to $3.00+per gallon gasoline or at least trying to save it for precious trips to the mountains. Drove to work once in August and so far once in September . . . though my resolve fades when it gets really wet.

Greg (and other two wheelers),
I've been without a car since January. I ride the Burke twice daily on my 12.2 mile RT commute to work. I've been rallying support for bike commuting among students and faculty at the school. Your own August/September records are great! Keep it up! I doubt I see y'all as I'm on the bike at 6 in the morning. But recent sunrises over the Cascades from the Montlake Bridge are spectaular. Soon we'll be seeing snow! Holler if you need motivation through the pending deluge.
I've been doing it for almost 10 years now. I couldn't imagine getting to work any other way. I do drive on occasion, like when my legs are dead after a long weekend, but I sure feel guilty.

Aaron

I try to bike 4/5 days a week. I only started doing so a few months ago - soon I'll need to get a bike light for the return trip in the evening...

Cool,Phil, I've been using a NiteRider 15 watt helmet-mounted light for a while now, seemed pretty bright a couple of years ago (enough that drivers flash their high beams at me) but the ante has been upped with the new generation of HID lights (also the price, unfortunately). The helmet mount is nice as it lets you focus the beam right into car windshields when it doesn't look like the driver sees you.

I have experimentally determined that a climber's LED headlamp doesn't nearly have the range necessary for biking. I also need a new rear light, I broke mine a while ago.

And I agree that biking in the rain sucks. :)
