Do you mean Duffy Lake? What route did you ski on Oval? Thanks
It can be done as a long day trip - best maybe in late March or April. It certainly makes sense to camp in there and do both peaks.
I have been into the both Gardner and North Gardner a few times. Shelokum Lake is approached, as best I can remember, by traversing in from the east. Slopes above it are steep enough to only want to...
Thanks for breaking trail. It helped.
We could drive almost to the snowmobilers turnoff at Rd 36 just short of the Heliotrope trailhead. Yes Dave Heinbach is the one. Yes, I have been up Rd 38 to where you could look at Marmot...
Interesting? Many possibilities there. But how did you climb onto those downed trees with snowboards?
I skiied it that way today, and then up to Cleator Rd. There is much less snow on the Fragrance Lk trail than on the Pine and Cedar trail. I didn't do any damage to my skis, but I wou...
My preferred system for glacier travel is for each person to carry 20m segments in addition to the rope joining the skiers. Then each person has an unencumbered rope to drop to the victim, set u...
to be clearer - I meant using a figure 8ed sling as a chest harness. Is this better?
What would you suggest instead of a sling as a light chest harness?
Let me throw out a protocol for glacier travel in the Cascades. If there is even one crevasse visible every member of the party has at least a 20m piece of rope, a set of prusiks or ascenders (ti-bloc...
The gate has been open for at least several weeks, and possibly all winter. Crossing the Middle Fork at the Green Creek trailhead (about where you can drive to right now) seemed quite reasonable a few...
In skiing the Cascades backcountry since '70-'71 I have never had or even heard of a glacier skiing crevasse accident in the Cascades. This year there are the White salmon and Nisquall...
The slush shouldn't last long. There simply has been no spring until this last week. Usually a week or so of heat will bake the snow down to an all day solid, easy skiing consistency.
Hello, Darin. I'm planning to try that approach soon. But is there still a bridge for it across the Middle Fork?
We went up from Rainy Pass.
Tuesday, Nov 14 - fat skis not required. 6 inches or so of nice dry snow on top - excellent skiing. Snowing light to moderate all day. No wind, or even any visual signs of wind.
They patched them up a little while ago. Also the road to the Chowder ridge trail opened July 1 and there's good skiing available from that. On July 2 you still couldn't quite re...
It's Don Portman's birthday that's responsible for the name.
I tried that very same route more than 30 years ago with Pete Doorish. A long walk up through huge piles of debris. We gave up when the slide danger seemed to get too high, as the day warmed up.
Do you mean eloquent, articulate and enlightening conversation, ... or bloviating pontification? Enquiring minds want to know.
Hello, Martin. Long time. I believe McClellan's steep faces were skiied long ago. I did one east side one over 30 years ago, and I'm pretty sure others were well ahead of me, there,...
The snow in the backcountry near Mt. Baker has turned difficult to ski on most exposures. Difficult breakable crust except on shaded north exposures. Up to at least 5400 feet. Today, it wasn't q...
I have to say this was the best summer snow quality I've ever found (that's over nearly 40 years). Credit substantial late June snowfall and freezing nights.
Tod didn't just keep up - he was usually either ahead or far ahead.
Very impressive (if nuts). I've looked at that both from Devil's Park and on a map and thought it should be possible, but difficult to get to and difficult to do. But never did I consider...
I went up HLP today with Don Portman and it was quite a different trip than yours just a few days earlier. In fact there were completely different snow conditions than yesterday at Table Mtn. Th...
To answer your other question, we just headed up from the outhouse. The trail would avoid the brushwack but goes well out of the way.
The berm is easy to go around. The platform stayed solid all day (it didn't warm up much). The berm is at 3,000 feet, the trailhead at 3,700, so the distance is well within the reach of touring...
3 days, though someone, starting early, not getting diverted by peripheral runs, and striving for speed, could do it in one day.
