Ha! In a moment of foolishness several years ago, I tried to practice kiting my paraglider on Kite Hill in a strong wind. Just about killed myself! People have gotten hurt kiting...
Looks like great skiing!  You better let us know where it is so that we can be sure not to ski there.
Yo! Great report.

Backcountry Daydream…

As I woke and opened my eyes all I could hear were whispers, “you have no choice; we’re taking you to our secret powder stash.”

Something tells me that isn't Woodland Park...
Nice Secret Stash

You do know that every powder shot posted on TAY means roughly 40 seconds of lost work productivity  ;)

Wow...looks sweet.  Making me long for some more blue sky and white snow.  I got a trip back to the home front in April...so maybe you can show me some of the new stashes you are scouting this year.  Remember not to post the best ones!
H2OJOE - Yeah, it was a great day!  It's not too often you get a day like that in the middle of January on Mt. Hood with no wind.  The great winter views more than made up for the icy conditions.  Let's hope for some fresh snow next week!
Thanks for sharing.  We are so lucky to be getting this great snow!
JibberD,
You are still my partner and I'm going to haul yer butt all over the hills when you get back from Germany next season and help you get rid of all that sausage and beer you've been consuming . :D We miss you JibberD. Getting any Euro skiing in?
Ahh, one of the many great mysteries of the internet ....   :)  why ya sometimes get the little-box-with-red-x ... and why sometimes you can actually see the picture.

As it happens, I can see that pic from my home computer, but not from work... which is often the case for me, which makes me figure it probably has to do with firewall/antivirus settings.

Jeanette, of course I care :)  Also, you seem far too youthful to have a son who is already married.

Ron, thanks for the links to JW video vault.  I had fun watching them!

The linked pics from Picasa come up for me just fine.  I am a Google Picasa user but doubt that has anything to do with my not having troubles with the pics...

Hey Chris does your calling me your "old partner" mean I'm permanently off the circuit with you :'(  or that I'...
As a relative newbie to the backcountry I can say that you can't find a better crew of guys to take you out and show you how it's done. From evaluating route conditions before selecting a route to setting skin tracks on the way back up there is a lot to learn from these guys. Thanks again.

(where was Mad_Dog)

Hey Jibber, thanks for noticing that I wasn't there, at least someone cares ;), just fooling of course.  My son and his wife had just returned from a month in London visiting her family so we held off our Christmas until January 14 when they returned home.  One additional nice thing, we really did have a WHITE Christmas this year  ;D.
Stay tuned...
JW and RonJ,
Thanks for the link to the  DANJER video library. ;D I've been reliving some of your past escapades and remembering how much fun they where. 8)
Scottie
Ah yes, that's my instigator in the red touque.  Taught him everything I know about Avy control.  How to aim the big chunks, how to achieve maximum impact, heh heh...  And what I didn't teach him, he learned from Calvin & Hobbes!

Thanks for the report, JimmyO.  I think you've provided Lowell, Charles, & I with enough beta for an epic tour that will combine the bodacious snowpack of Woodland Park, the scenic expanses of Green Lake, the sunless...

Scotty, you'll have to talk to my agent...
PS... Ron what's with the pic? I only get the red box.

Ok, Jer, I'll have my people talk to your people and get that cleared up...  ;)

Fact is, I haven't got a clue ???
I don't think there are any hotlinking restrictions at the site where the picture is posted.

Scotty, you'll have to talk to my agent 8) I do have some unfinished movies that should be done soon...but then again.... I've said that before 8) Hope to ski with you soon brother!

Nice photos.  Wasn't that just a beautiful day?  We skinned up out of Pocket Creek that day and got a 7 volcano day - views of Rainier, Adams, St. Helens, Hood, Jefferson, Washington and the Sisters - all from the top of Gumjuwac Butte.  Sure made up for the lack of snow conditions.
Great trip report!

In the Maple Leaf Range (Sacajawea Valley), the locals roll avalanches down on those who might reveal their secret stash. Here is photographic proof obtained this morning.

Dave_R, you may recognize your son in some of these pictures. Charles's kids were there too, but I think they'd gone home by the time the avalanches started to roll.

I pull...
Your stash is pittyful compared to the glory run down the north face of Ravenna ditch. ;D

I hardly made anyone laugh...

I'm laughing. Thanks for the smiles!

Way go get it. :D
I'm dying to own an M8 as I have an M3 and three lenses which all will fit and function according to the available literature. A slightly less expensive alternative to the M8 is the Epson RD 1 body still pricey, but a little less so. Drool.

Great photos indeed, Jason. I've always liked your photos, but they seem to be getting even better over time. Nice try on the route also. My own summer trip out that way also piqued my curiosity about that as a ski destination, but I haven't even gone as far as trying yet.

nice photo of joe

sorry i missed out on yesterday, but i'm sure we'll get out again real soon

Nikon D200. It works well, but its a lot of extra weight. Unfortunately I think that there are trips where I will have to leave this beast behind.

That's why I was curious; I figured it had to be a digital SLR.  I upgraded last season from a pocket sized point-and-shoot to the Canon 20D.  There is no comparison to the quality of the images from what I was previousl...
Awe-inspiring pictures!  We've sure been blessed with the cold temps and continued snowfall.  I hit up Mission Ridge on Thursday with nearly 14" of bone-dry fluff, 2 degrees and bluebird.  I don't know if it has ever been that good!  Sadly, I found a hidden rock garden and ended up getting a 2nd degree shoulder separation on the first run  :-[.  So for the next month I'll have to live vicariously through photos like these.
Great accomplishment, Pete et. al.!
Way to get it, guys (and gals)!  That shows some commitment.  Great TR and pics.
Hey Scottie, Jerry's got a fair collection of his videos posted HERE.
Hey JW,
Scotsman here, and I agree with my old partner JibberD that I seriously miss the DANJER videos especially since Paradise is closed. :'(

Isn't it time for a retrospective of some of your best work such as a DanJer productions "greatest hits "video. :D

Come on man, get with  and it lets see some of those vids again!
Anyone second me on that request?

Scottie.
glad y'all enjoyed the TR.  If anyone ever wants to go play on the NE bowl of Preacher, drop me a line...I'd happliy go back in there again.
Thanks for the TR!

Nice trip, Pete!  Those couloirs look delicious.
Nice work. It looks like you had better luck than I did. Way to get after it :)
Looks like beautiful terrain back there  :)
Could be worse...you could get a $538 ticket for not chaining up.  That could happen after passing a full chain-up area (with no indication of it being the last chance to chain up) and driving slowly behind a plow, with traction control (albeit front-wheel-drive), with snow tires, and stopping at the top to chain up in a safe area (and not blocking anyone).  That would be (and was) quite annoying.

Thanks Garth and Lowell,

It's much easier for me to remember what's important when I'm alone in the mountains, which is most of the time now. When I'm skiing with a group, it's all to easy for me to slip back into that 'friendly-competitive' mode that was common when I wa...

Thanks for posting this Mike. When you told me what you had found last night I was hoping you would post it.
The surface hoar at Crystal on Sunday was amazing. Never seen it so thick up here in the PNW.
Scotsman

Chris, that surface hoar will be the layer of note after more snow falls. The surface hoar was not so bad at Hurricane Ridge but the faceted snow...
Thanks guys  :D

I did notice that on my first photo I put Kendal Peak  ???. Close enough, right  :-[ ?
Mack, you aren't  injured enough.  I wanted to test out my shoulder without holding anyone back, except Sidnie. She has to wait for me. Besides, I knew you would be slaving over the stove preparing dinner.  So, I made 20 or so careful turns without popping my should out. :D  And then there was the four miles of skinning( blister test). Still not ready for a real tour.  Great dinner and fun get together. Thanks.
Awesome, way to explore.  Being a seeker of long moderates, I have always wanted to ski that NE slope.  Thanks for the pic., maybe now I will actually go.  Beside, Preacher is a "Homecourt 100" I have not done yet!  That and Caroline's big slopes.
Thanks again for sharing,
John
Nice work, and some excellent shots (I love the first one). I've been framing many shots like this for a while - easy to do in Photoshop using canvas size - I've automated it with an action so I can throw a frame on with one click.

Keep up the great TRs - as others have said your web site, and contributions here, are much appreciated.
That is a great closing thought Larry. Garth
Good job Tony

Snow Troll, I am curious about your "no rappel" comment. I have only skied the slot of couple of times and it was always nice conditions and a rappel in never occured to me. Are you using a non-obvious entrance? Or is it just a comfort zone thing? If it is a comfort zone thing, then feel no need to defend it, because we all draw those lines differently. But I have heard of a couple parties talking of rappelling into the slot and wanted to understand their think...
