Loveland Pass, Colorado
Day 25
14" new, 23" over 48 hours

Lucky 7

Amazing. 12 noon and I'm the only one standing on the side of the road with my thumb out. Peak hour usually for the sleep-in crowd at the pass and the bottom curve sports not one waiting customer. Well, except the two beautiful girls walking back up into the forest. Which was very strange as there was 23" new over the last two days and something of a trench was needed to move uphill. These girls were just carrying their boards and walking up the down tracks. Weird.

Hmm. Another day at Ringling Bros.

Across the street, at the busy parking area, CDOT hadn't the time or gumption and neglected to plow out the whole lot after the two foot snowfall, so there was little room for the circus to move about.

And circus it was. Three rings and a flying monkey.

Hipsters in their new Christmas-begot gear vied with haggard regulars for precious spots at the turn out, bubbling groups of skiers and riders each with their own agenda, few with avalanche gear, fewer still able to actually use it, all appearing remarkably similar in their quests to outdo each other for the win.

But these folks traveled in waves, and circles, and with the right know-how, were totally avoidable. It was the 7th run of the day and I had not crossed tracks once. On a Saturday. On MLK weekend. With 23" new since the road reopened.

Perhaps it was the 50-60 mph wind gusts blowing over the top of the pass that was keeping away the uninitiated. It was downright brutal. Which was good as the avalanche conditions were very dangerous, and most of the yahoos skiing off the top had no gear. Their thinking was their multitude somehow prevented mother nature from forming her deadly plots. Sometimes humans are just lucky and don't know the danger they are in.

All day long, a short hike, and quiet, every run was virgin as the tourons were loathe to perspire.

I turned and a big black pick-up rolled to a stop just as a group of riders emerged from the trees. I jumped into the back and took my spot against the rear, facing forward. Ahead, beyond and above the other skiers and riders getting in the truck, I had a clear view up into the forest.

And there, up along a clearing in the woods, I saw the most amazing thing.

A naked women was facing away from me holding her board...in front of her.

What in the hell?

The bare skin on a powder day was a little hard for my mind to process. But processing I was and I realized it must have been one of the chics going uphill. I suddenly realized I was not the only one who could see this display unfolding before them and the small crowd I stood amongst all turned and stared. I heard a few cheers and laughs. I saw the photographer kneeling ten feet away from her, but my focus was elsewhere.

"Thank You!" I yelled as we pulled away from the snowbank, heading to the top for another run.

Skiing off Loveland Pass is nothing if not unique. It always provides. Always.
Downright psychedelic
