Awesome to get a response from one of the folks in the party. It's way too easy to armchair quarterback this stuff, especially when the mistakes and poor decisions are obvious. Thanks for sharing that Bird.

That is really hard to watch but the incident report is worth reading. The trip leader put himself in the cross hairs so that guys like me can continue to learn and apply the finer points of backcountry travel. I respect his candor. In 1986 I triggered a corn snow avalanche cutting across the top of a similar feature while skiing alone in the BC. The result was lost gear but nothing worse. I didn't know then that corn snow, wet snow sets up like concrete in seconds. Bottom line is I have always been terrified of the risk associated with our sport knowing that it only takes one tiny error to turn a dream day into a nightmare. I appreciate the forums and have been reading them year round since before I was a member here. A commitment to continued learning, attention to detail, patience, humility and the ability to abort are essential characteristics to cultivate in this sport to be sure.

The phenomena related to resort skiers venturing into the BC with the "it could never happen to me syndrome". For each member to not be fully equipped with avy gear is deplorable. That and letting the guy sit buried for so long was mind blowing.
