There is a great book about that operation entitled The Winter Fortress, by local author Neil Bascomb.  Fascinating read.

Great read. I just returned it to the Seattle Public Library so it's available.

The deprivations these men went through are mind boggling while trying to stay alive from the weather and the Nazis.
Their mission is so amazing that it succeeded without ever firing a shot yet destroyed all of the heavy water machinery.
Unfortunately they were able to restart the heavy water production within months not years so lots more was to happen before the heavy water production was shut down for good.
