The Winter Fortress is a really good book. Good holiday gift for a skier-reader! Its focus is on espionage and sabotage, but those Norwegians had to ski like starving Olympians just to survive. There is one passage where a resistance member is chased by skilled Wehrmacht soldiers...gives a whole new meaning to the biathlon concept....

Thanks all for this thread, such a great story, of humble people who took such crazy risks with no thought of their own safety. They are quietly slipping away, all my WW II mentors have passed.

Surprised this thread had some legs. Great story though.
I just saw a nice tribute to Bush the elder on 60 Minutes. WWII's youngest combat pilot, shot down into the Pacific with two other crew who did not survive. What ever your political persuasion he was of that greatest generation too and seemed to hold its civil values to the end. Kind of refocused my view of him, though I didn't care much for his Sec of Interior.
