Saving the savers was created by Jonn-E
I have a set of G3 skin savers that are trashed. I had a glue transfer problem (that was improved via the brown paper bag method) that got a coating of hydrated glue on the skin savers. Then they got cat hair and garage mank on the sticky residue due to an unfortunate gear dry accident. I'd like to save these because it costs $18 for a new set and I'm cheap. I've tried soap and water and that does not remove the glue. I have a variety of strong household chemicals available; does anyone know what would dissolve the glue? Acetone? Denatured alcohol? Simple Green?

A few years ago I wanted skin savers for some skins that didn't come with, and some replacements for pairs that were gummy.
I strongly suspected that the skin companies were not manufacturing this stuff, and no company would mass produce such a simple product for just a few ski skin making companies. I suspected it was made for some other purpose, and some smarty pants BC ski bum figured out that he/she could cut it up and use it to prolong the life of skin glue. Then (hopefully) sold the idea to the manufacturer(s) so they could buy the stuff, cut it up and sell it for x-times the cost.
But what was it?
After some searching and scouring the shelves at Home Depot, VOILA!

For less than the cost of one pair you can have a lifetime supply.

kneel turner, thank you so much for this link!!! I had also thought in the past this must be a re-purposed general use product, but never investigated far enough to figure out what it was. I will buy a roll from home depot and have enough to replace mine and give skin savers to my ski friends for Hanukkah gifts.

I have used "molded" woven plastic mesh before, purchased a giant roll off ebay for a whopping $5. Pet screen strings pulled apart on me just like the POS skin savers voile sold with their old tractor skins.

I imagine soaking them in a bucket with TSP would dissolve the glue. get's the labels off of beer bottles just dandy.

I've made my own savers out of "party nylon" from Joanne Fabric. The stuff is dirt cheap and if you want to get fancy you can sew them into rectangular bags that make it easier to manage skins on a windy ridge.
