I seem to remember once learning in a HS History class that the last hippie died in 1969. I've developed a recent theory that only true ski-bums and doctors telemark (due to their periodic abundance of time to learn/suffer through the learning curve), everyone else frees their heels only periodically when walking up hill.
On a more thread specific note, I really appreciate how conscientious you're being about the correct interaction between in-bounds hikers and the resort management. It's only going to take a few negative encounters with chowder-heads (like the guy snowshoeing up under PacCrest chair last Friday on opening day with his board on his back and his dog off the leash) for them to axe something that has been a quiet & long-standing tradition at the pass.
