On arriving at the entrance gate ranger says "The gate to Paradise at Longmire will not open today due to a shortage in staffing required to ensure public safety." No prior notice of this BS. Somebody overslept? Don't they have a work schedule and can give notice if they don't have staff? You can check the latest Rainier Twitter and it does you no good. Incompetent, irresponsible park management IMHO.

Glad I did chores today -- If I had driven down, I would have expected the gate to open given the lack of new snow. This is pretty disappointing.

The twitter feed did mention it -- but the notice went out @ 9:17AM and the "explaination" not until 9:44AM

Email the park superintendent and tell him. There is little or no accountability at MORA right now, so the only way to effect change is to make noise.

I also suggest that you send cogent, considerate communication to our state representatives and senators.

And if you're risking the drive down, you can't check the dang twitter feed after Eatonville unless you have a sat phone. That really burns me, that the lazy jerks can't post earlier.

I've configured my Twitter account to FWD posts by Mt Rainer and the WSDOT mountain pass reports to SMS, so I'll get those posts outside the 3G and LTE coverage areas, but were there is still some sort of signal -- I'm on Verizon, I still get TXTs as far as Elbe.

Still if I'd driven down Monday, I would have been pretty disappointed -- Did someone wake up with the flu ? Definitely lame that on a nice sunny day with no plowing required they couldn't muster enough sheriff's to keep order and open the gate or at the very least Tweeted that the gate would not open by 7:00AM so one could head to Crystal instead.
