In dire need of inexpensive softshell pants last year, I purchased a pair by Mountain Equipment, a brand I'd never heard of previously - because the price was what I needed.  But I've been completely pleased by them!  I have the Women's Chamois Pant ( www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/the_gear/cl..._chamois_pant---256/ ) - there doesn't appear to be a men's version of those pants, but some of their other softshell pants might be worth checking out.  Those pants are described as "a great choice for summer mountaineering and hiking adventures", but they're actually quite warm - too warm for regular summer hiking, and for tours in the winter, they're perfect with a baselayer underneath as long as it isn't precipitating particularly hard.

$99 for Patagonia Simple Guides, which people really seem to like. Looks like they may have discontinued them, but gear website still have a few on-hand.

I have some REI pants that cost $99 which have worked well so far. They have the standard flare in the ankles to fit boots but then are fairly tight and form-fitting in the thigh-to-glute region. Might not be the fit everyone is after, but I appreciate feeling like the disco-king they transform me into.

Hi All,

Woody here from the US Mountain Equipment offices. (We're based out of Leavenworth, WA)

Glad to hear you like the Chamois! Men's Version of the Chamois is the Ibex. Sounds almost precisely like chmnyboy is after.

Gotta remember, Mountain Equipment is a British company, so Summer mountaineering means walking around the Cairngorms or Peak district in 40°F temps with rain and sleet. :-)

Cheers.

There are 3 Golite stores in the Portland area.  Not sure what the fascination with Portland is since it is a Colorado company, but there you have it.

Isn't everybody fascinated by PDX!?!?!?!?! ;) I had no idea Golite was just as fascinated as everyone else. Looks like they've set up shop at the outlet malls.
