You are correct. If it's clear the snow can freeze by radiative cooling regardless of temperature. It's weird how often people cast aspersions on any chance of the snow refreezing because of temperature. Empirical evidence from experience is the proof.
I'd be interested to hear if, this weekend, anyone skied below those elevations and experienced what appeared to be freeze/thaw conditions. As our group expected, Saturday morning and early afternoon, Interglacier all the way to Steamboat Prow, was complete slush.

Anyone have experience biking up before the motorized opening?
Biking up the rode with skis I believe is more trouble than it's worth. The hike up the trail from White River campground is not that big a deal.

Was it a clear there the night before? Snoqualmie pass cameras showed some cloud cover early AM Saturday, fwiw...I'd be interested to hear if, this weekend, anyone skied below those elevations and experienced what appeared to be freeze/thaw conditions. As our group expected, Saturday morning and early afternoon, Interglacier all the way to Steamboat Prow, was complete slush.
I noticed some steep north(ish)-facing surface snow re-freezing in the shade a bit before 4PM as we skied down into the NE basin of Silver on Saturday afternoon.

Here's more of the "Empirical evidence from experience is the proof" of which Sky speaks:
On 6/2 the "Geezer Gaggle" skied the Tatoosh between around 10am to 2pm.
Ski pole penetration was about two to three FEET depending on aspect; ski penetration varied from an inch or two on the flats to up to six inches on steeper aspects later in the day. The tour was cut short since no one could envision of anything good coming from being on that snowpack later in the day.
From 6/3 to 6/8 there were many clear nights, none of which experienced temps below freezing according to the Paradise telemetry and sunny days, which allowed for multiple cycles for melt/freeze (the freezing assumable caused by radiant cooling over the clear nights).
On 6/9 the Geezer Gaggle again skied the Tatoosh (this time skiing the Unicorn Saddle and the Snow Lake Chutes) between 10am and 5pm.
Ski POLE penetration was about two to four INCHES, everywhere, all day long, and ski penetration varied from an a half inch on the flats to up to 4 inches depending on slope angle; also for the entire day. Late in the day the top two to four inches would sluff on the steepest aspects, but that just left a nice bomber slide bed that made for even better skiing.

Some of that deep stuff you experienced Ron may be due to the snowpack draining, and the next visit later the gravity working with increased draining. Plus, didn't we have some new snow before that nice stretch?
And I know you know Ron, but FWIW to the newbies, the north faces seem to be the last to consolidate from the mush cycle.
But it does not exclude the freeze without freezing temps possibility.
Seen it set up many times when the shadows fall over Dege in the afternoon and it is not even close to freezing out.
Which reminds me, when are they opening that road again? Really???
