Removing wax from skin glue?

I use the paper backing that comes with/on the skin when you purchase them.
1. Re-apply the paper to the skin, sticky side up.
2. use a warm iron (normal wax iron) and iron on top of the paper.
3. as it cools, slowly peel the paper off the skin.
4. done.

I find this works really well to clean all kinds of gunk out of the glue and it also helps melt the existing glue back into the skin backing material. I do this whenever my skins are not sticking too well. If need be, I touch up spots with BD Gold Label skin glue. After the touch up has dried, I reaply the paper and run a warm iron over the paper again.

By using the skin paper and an iron, I have avoided the need to "re-glue" my skins for years.

Good luck!

Here is what I would try:

1) Ignore it -- a half inch wide strip down the the middle is NBFD -- many wider skins have a glueless strip in the center to make it easier to peel skins off anyway. Have you actually had problems with skins coming unglued on a trip yet? If not -- try and see what happens -- bring a a few extra Voile straps in case the glue fails -- or the reall old skool trick -- carry several yards of duct tape by wrapping it around your ski pole six inches below the handle.

2) If you need to removed the wax, cut strips of brown paper grocery bags somewhat wider than the skins -- lay over glue side, very briefly heat with waxing iron, just enough to melt wax, but not glue. Repeat until no more wax comes off. If glue comes off -- reglue per RonJ's instructions above.

3) The next time you hot wax your skis -- be sure to scrape all wax off the base and ideally polish with a nylon brush. The wax that counts is the wax absorbed into the PTex structure -- wax left on the surface of the base does nothing to improve glide.

I was just reading last night on how to remove candle wax from eyeglasses (14 year olds!) and it suggested putting them in the freezer as the wax hardens to a point where it may just fall off. You might give that a try first as it's probably the least effort and risk.

I have ironed a paper bag on my skins and it works pretty good and does clean up the surface of the skin glue pretty nicely.

I would second the heat gun version.  I have one of those paint stripper heat guns and a appropriate sized putty knife.  With a little heat the glue comes right off.  Personally, I have only done this with G3 skins.  I have never had a pair of BD skins go bad on me.

This worked for me:
Put the skins in the bathtub with warm water. Add hot water, gradually increasing the water temperature until the wax softens and floats off the glue. Skim wax off top of water with strainer. Drain tub & hang skins to dry.
Easy, no mess & glue is undamaged.
