Backcountry Dance Party... really? was created by jdclimber
Yesterday did a quick little backcountry tour near Bagley Lakes close to the Mt. Baker ski area. Many folks out on beautiful bluebird. Including one guy blasting techno-music from a speaker system attached to his backpack. I was dumbfounded at the rudeness of his noise-pollution, don't people use earphones anymore?
Wife talked me out of confronting him.
Have I become an old fuddy duddy? Has anyone else come across this sort of noise pollution in the quiet backcountry? Has this become acceptable and normal while I wasn't looking?

As a college student myself, I wouldn't be happy hearing that while heading out into the mountains.... Scares away everything too!

Ran into a couple thru hikers in the PCT once south of Chinook who had a similar set up.  It's rude.  It's bad enough getting stuck on a lift with my kid a couple times and the other rider has their music ( with offensive lyrics) on so loud we could hear it.  So your guy was way out of line.  I'd approach someone if they were doing that, but I'd expect no effect.

Agreed that it's a bit inconsiderate to jam the tunes loud, but don't think its a big deal if someone is playing music with a jammypack that you can't hear from 100 feet away.

Also I would not expect solitude at Bagley Lakes; you can still see and hear people in the ski area and have no reasonable expectation of a wilderness experience.

Kick out the Jams! We done kicked them out.

My favs have been the occasional guitar strumming skiers I've encountered while out and about. Kind of hard to bag on the wilderness bound multitasking musicians.
