Sugar bowl gets hammered. Typically the most snow, and open in storms.

Squaw is far and away the best natural terrain as people already chimed in kt 22 is legendary, but the resort is 4500 acres so there's plenty besides that one chair. People have written books about the lines at sqaw.

This videos comedy, and worth a watch

I'd place kirkwood second, but its abit off the beaten path. Stay away from heavenly unless you want to gamble(casino at the base) and ride moguls and cat tracks. Donner pass is the place to tour. If you wanna rent sleds hit up Heath at full throttle in kings beach. He's got some mean machines

Sugar does get hammered in a storm and can be very good. Kirkwood can be the same way if you're staying down south. Its a really fall-line resort with lots of options on a storm day. But my favorite for a storm day - especially mid-week - is probably Alpine. The main runs do get skied out but there's a couple hours' worth of terrain that people cycle through before it all gets tracked out, even with the locals hitting it.

Sherwood chair on the backside can be good in a storm. So can Scott chair if you head out to the north of the chair line, on the edge of the area - big timber and good fall lines there. Off the summit chair there are lots of options again to the N on the area boundary, though it gets hammered on top - it stays open longer than Squaw in the wind it seems, though Red Dog and KT22 at Squaw can also be fantastic in a storm and are a bit less affected by the wind.

Be prepared to feel your way back down to tree line with all these resorts, and bring your avy gear if you want to ski the side country - lots of good touring options in a storm too if you can find a place to park the damn car!

Depends on the weather and where you are staying - will you be in North Lake/Trukee or South Lake during your stay?

I'll be in Reno for an interview, just have a day in Tahoe, so probably will try to stay north if I can.

Thanks for all the replies, those fingers look fun! I'll be mid-week so hopefully lines will be down. It's looking like Squaw!

What about the smaller areas like Boreal, Tahoe Donner, Donner ski ranch and Homewood, do any of these offer good terrain for powder skiing on storm days? Which of the small resorts is your favorite?
