Given good technique in fashioning and installing a back plate, I'm not sure if it would still be weaker or in fact, stiffer. Seems canoes are in the 14 to 17+ foot range, making an uncut unit really large. And then there's the two for one thing.. Did see a 12' rotomolded that might be ok. I'm thinking a downside of the canoe approach may be that, in most cases, the undersurface shape is only partially flat, and so a loaded sled could easily cant to one side. Still, it may be worth a further look.
If anyone has a past-prime canoe they'd like to commit to the idea, we would sure accept the donation and see what could be developed. Thanks

Wouldn't the guy in the back half of the canoe - sled have to paddle backwards then?

Just for fun: some of the lowland ski trails around here can get 2-3 ft. walls on them, where a regular pulk is useless. I've always wanted to try a canoe-type trad. Saami pulk in those conditions:

Coleman canoes are flat bottom with 3 full length runners. They Make a Scanoe which is 15' with a square stern and a 750 lb. payload. If you cut the canoe in half you wont be able to back up which can be real handy. These canoes are very affordable. Bon voyage, X
