I'll throw in my nickle with Scottsman's 2 cents. Raise the tails is a good solution. I strap my tips if my pack is less than full, but if the pack is full, I can get away without strapping them together.

I always strap them to complete the "A" I think I just need a pack that is designed for carrying ski's which mine is not sadly. Though I think next time I may try to strap them in a bit different to raise them another few inches to see if I can avoid the proding on my legs or, I'll just do what i did before and run down with them strapped to the pack but holding them like a wheelbarrow on my trot to the car. It raises more eye brows that way :) ::)

On my first trip of the season I enlisted the services of a porter, eliminating any carry issues.

OR you could do what my buddy Jtack does and carry them over your shoulder. He never ever straps his skis to his pack... and he can still bushwack uphill and down faster than me.

I have a Lowe 2400 cubic, smaller than this would be for resort O B . I put 1 ski on each side (old school). This way, a ski wont bonk the back of your head. I also add a strap at the bottom of the pack (for a tighter fit). The ski can also hit the calf area of your leg.
I put the bottom strap where your boot would step in. It's also a good idea to fill the contents of the pack, like with a towel or something, so the skis are firmly packed.

I made a couple of spacer blocks that slip between the skis and the pack. I screwed small pieces of 1/4 inch plywood to this. My pack has both an adjustable ski strap and a fixed strap which are fixed to the pack one on top of the other. I slip the plywood into the fixed strap and then cinch the adjustable strap tight over the ski which in turn is tightened against the block. This helps keep my legs safe. Maybe not the most elegant idea but it does work.
