Packing Ski's on backpack problem was created by BrianT
So I have a pretty small day pack that I ski with during the summer months and when I setup my A-Frame on my pack, my ski's seem to twist a bit. This doesn't bother me going up, but going down, my legs (right behind my knees) always smack my tails of the skis. Do you guys have any suggestions to avoid this, or just suck it up and be a man?

They got so bad, I had to carry the tails on my sides with my arms as I jogged back to the paradise parking lot on the paved trail.

I carry a bungee or strap to keep my tips together, otherwise I catch my tails also. Cuts you up in shorts.

A-frame seems to get the weight up on my shoulders best.

My regular pack can carry three ways - A frame, vertical, and quick-carry diagonal - and going down my legs sometimes hit my skis no matter which way I carry them if it's steep enough.

Best bets are making sure your shoulder straps are adjusted tight and equal (load-leveler straps also) if you're going A frame or carrying diagonal and being aware of which side your tails are on so you can twist your body when necessary. Also having a super short pair of summer skis helps.

Also using a pack designed for carrying skis.

To help with this problem it helps if you A frame your skis with your bindings as high as possible for the down.

When I'm going up I usually have my bindings between the lower and upper strap on my pack sides, keeping the tips as low as possible for the climb( and strapped together at tip as tight as possible).

On the way down, to avoid the problem you describe I've taken to putting the bindings above the top strap, thereby keeping the tips higher ( and less stable admittedly which doesn't seem to matter so much when heading to the barn)

my 2 cents.
