Yep, I put them right on my bare feet, I have not tried thin socks, because my main problem is blisters, and I want to cut down on the friction. In the middle of winter, when I take my boots off my feet will be moist. This time of year, they will be wet, but my socks will stay dry, and the plastic sack slips smoothly inside the sock. It sounds worse than it is, under some conditions the sock will twist around my foot and from time to time I will have to stop and re adjust the sock and the bag. I really wish i didn't have to use them, but for me they are the ticket. I did a 14 mile mostly flat tour with a fairly heavy pack, and while my feet wanted out of my boots at the end of the day, by the next morning they were good as new and no blisters.
