How are these bases? Reapairable? was created by dsmdan95
Hi, A buddy of mine is thinking about picking up some alpine skis. The bases are a little rough but I think they can be reapaired with some ptex. What do you guys think? Could these be repaired with a stone grind ptex and wax? or are they too far gone?

They are the same version of my alpine skis only newer and he only wants $50 for the skis poles boots and bindings which i think is a really good deal if the bases could be made like new again.

most of my bases look like that....

If you have any spots where there are deep gouges going all the way to an edge, and even have some edge material exposed where you should just be seeing ptex, then you should probably get that fixed...depending on your local shop's rates and your interest in DIY ski repair, you might be able to buy a base repair iron and a spool of ptex for less.

Tognar.com has a ton of repair tools and good instructions

Get a base grind, they'll look like new. I can't believe this isn't some sort of troll.

In my early days I used to get concerned with that, buy the p-tex sticks and repair my own but really it is just cosmetic and now I just fill'm in with wax. You can fix it but will it really make a difference in performance? Base grind like aaron said would prob be the best bet to make it look the best.

They look fine -- a base grind will do it, or just wax them and forget about it. I spend a fair bit of time working on my bases and waxing and all that, but I think it's mostly an excuse to drink beer and watch movies in the garage -- I'm not convinced I can really tell the difference between a well ground base and one that's all banged up, when it comes down to it. Fresh wax and sharp edges make a much bigger difference.
