OK armchair meteorologists: there seems to be warming aloft at Snoq/Stevens as of 5-6 AM this morning and there is wicked freezing rain at my house.  I could get away today.  Good day or freezing rain and sludge?  David

I'm no expert, so I could definitely be wrong, but I just pulled the plug on heading up today and burning an "out of work to ski" day.

-temp at 3100 has been pretty steady at ~20d F
-temp up top spiked up to 29-30f
-about half an inch of precip and only one inch of snow during the spike...

This sucks. I hope I'm wrong. Somebody please post a report so I can know if I should be kicking myself.

A good place to look for inversions are the Skew-T soundings from the National Weather Service. They can be found under Observations/Additional observations, then scroll to the bottom of the page. Soundings can be found for Quillayute and Salem, Or.

This mornings Quillayute sounding shiows the coldest temperatures at the ground then warming to about -2 C and staying there up to about 5000' (850mb), before cooling above that level..

Salem's sounding shows 10C at Sea level with cooling to 0C at about 770mb (maybe 7000'). So the freezing level in Salem is about 7000' and with a southerly flow aloft the warm air is lifting northward.

So one can see that it is definitely warm aloft.

Based on the temps reported for the top and bottom of Alpental there is an inversion right now. But it is snowing here at Hyak. No freezing rain!

There was some freezing rain last night however. But there is 6 inches or so on top of a thin rain crust.

I just did a lap on Hyak and it was soft and the crust wasn't a big deal for me. But I'm certain my dog hated the crust.

I am seeing something in the temps up at Stevens right now that I am unable to understand.  The temp at the top of Skyline, 5250', is 30 degrees.  That is about where it has been for the last 24 hours.  The temp at the top of Tye Mill, 5180' is 18 degrees.  It had been very close to the temp at Skyline until 7:00 am this morning when it started falling while Skyline held steady.  The temp at the top of Brooks, 4850' and very close to Skyline is 15 degrees and followed a very similar track to Brooks.  It is likely that the Skyline data is in error right now or is there something that could account for a 15 degree temperature change in such a short distance?

The simple explanation: the winds shifted from westerly to easterly through the pass, which usually happens with approaching low pressure as the higher pressure cold air in eastern WA is pushed west through the passes. The shift in wind direction at both the 5180' Tye Mill and 4850' Brooks sites is followed by steady cooling over the next several hours.

This cold air pours through initially only at pass level (4000 ft at Stevens), but then the layer of cold air deepens as the pass flow increases. So higher and higher locations get exposed to the cold air at later times. Locations which are farther west but at similar elevations (like Skyline vs. Tye Mill) also take longer to get exposed to the cold air.

So the 3950' site cools first, followed by 4390', 4850', 5180', and 5250'. The data is quite consistent, and does not appear to be erroneous in this case.
