K2 = made in China - what do you expect?

Lots of bomber skis from both K2 and Volkl (and maybe Black Diamond) have come out of the same factory in Shenzhen. I would say it has more to do with the choice of core material - is it woodchip-in-hotglue-matrix stuff? Maybe not the best choice for a sandwich ski?

Go US, get Voile Chargers: 134-110-123 at 171cm, a bit fatter at 181.

Tell that to the fellow TAYer who ripped tele bindings out of pair of Chargers last year or the many who did the same on the old Insanes. Bad luck and/or sub-par quality knows no boundaries.

IME that sort of failure occurs when metal topsheet skis are improperly mounted as Robie suggests.  Metal topsheet skis must be drilled and tapped (sufficiently deep), lest the screw can create upward forces on the topsheet.  The screw needs to thread into the tapped hole without much force, not unlike a machine screw threading into a nut -- maybe a wee bit snugger but not much.  I always tap wood core skis too.

I have Sidestashes with Dukes for lift skiing.  They are wonderfully versatile skis.  But I wouldn't tour on a ski that heavy.

I also have grunge APs (Coombacks) which have very soft cores and, unlike Sidestashes, have no metal top sheet.  I helicoiled nearly all the holes in my APs.  I've mounted Dynafits on at least 5 Coombacks, all of which had soft cores and required some helicoiling.  All those mounts are holding up fine.  Light cores require care when mounting.  And sometimes helicoiling.  That's the price one pays for light touring cores.  No biggie.  That's why I have a helicoil kit.

ETA: I agree with Rong re Dynafit screws being a bit too short for some skis.  If the ski core is thick enough I use a longer ABS, available from Slidewright.

Zack,

Which vintage of the Sidestash have you been having the problems?

2009 and 2010 models. Both were similar breaks, with the 2010 breaking/delam under the midpoint of the boot and the 2009 under the front binder.

FYI I ended up picking up some 2012 BD Zealot's as my replacement (No more Sidestashs for me). I had some other ski's I was looking closely at but it ended up being easiest to pick something my local shop (Yes, you rock) had in stock that fit the dimension / shape I was looking for, giving me virtual no downtime. The quiver is now complete again although strangely heavy on BD skis. I never thought that would happen.
