The Monika Johnson Avalanche Education Scholarship

Our community suffered a huge loss last year when Monika Johnson broke through a cornice on Red Mountain, February 1st , 2011.  In her honor, a group of her good friends and family have started The Monika Johnson Avalanche Education Scholarship, a.k.a. The Yuki Awards.

A bunch of the core folks will be at NSAS on Sunday where there will be a brief intro to the program's goals.

Spread the love boys and girls. Let's make it a good and sustained effort towards promoting safety in the mountains.

Please any and all of you that have ever considered volunteering in your community, this is the time to act.!  Your efforts will breath embers onto the memory of Monika's Mountain Spirit for year's to come. Read the application, fill it out, and start to spread the word on avalanche awareness.

It would nice to see REI among the program donors. Have they been asked?

When Michael asked me to be involved last week ( something about stepping in front of a train) I jumped at the chance. This is potentially a great program that can raise awareness among groups that sorely need training. I know there is a bit of donation fatigue out there but throw something into the kitty for a good program. Lots of donations, small and large will allow us to reach more backcountry users.
