Skins adhesive not so adhesive when wet was created by Treehugger
Tried searching this but didn't find specifically what I was looking for.
Skied Mt. Herman last weekend in the soup. Got a pretty late start and fought through some wet snow. My skins got quite wet on the climb and before I knew it, they had become completely useless. The problem I was experiencing was that the adhesive had completely lost its tackiness due to the moisture, so there was nothing keeping the skins under the ski. They would just slide out from under me most annoyingly.
I just started this skinning thing and havn't tried glopstopper or any wax products on the skins. Even though this is more to prevent snow build up on the business side of the skin, would it help keep the skins dry and, therefore, the adhesive dry? Or is there a technique to restoring the tackiness other than just hanging them to dry when they become saturated?
Any advice would be awesome

One bandaid that helps is the dry your bases with a quick wipedown, then forcefully press the skin onto the ski using a scraper or your pole going tip to tail. Waxing should also help, as it will reduce the total amount of water in the skin to keep the water from getting pressed through the membrane, and also speeds drying.

I was having a similar problem with mine when spring/summer skiing last year, after a few seasons of use. I went ahead and re-glued them using a kit from Black Diamond (~$30). It didn't seem to apply quite as cleanly as advertised (this may have been operator inexperience) but they now grip really well.

I was wondering about regluing but they are still quite tacky when dry. I think I'll definitely pick up some skin wax. Is glop stopper pretty much everyone's favorite when it comes to keeping skin's dry?

I have been using Nikwax Ski Skin Proofer for the past 3 years and have been satisfied. It is a liquid with a sponge applicator that is applied to a wet or dry skin that is attached to the ski and allowed to dry.

Having the glue in good condition, properly waxed skins and bases as suggested above are all important.
Additionally a really solid tail attachment keeps the skins working (at least at some level) when the glue is degraded due wetness, icing, pine needles, pine pollen, etc.
I find the various commercial tail attachments to be inferior to the "rat tail" system -- which makes me wonder why it isn't offered commerially.
