needed gear was created by mackattack
Hello all, I'm new to the forum and will be working up at Paradise for the whole summer. I've never been in the back country at all (I live and go to school in Texas) and have no clue what I need out there for snowboarding.  What kind of gear should I be looking at? I don't have a huge budget up front but I don't mind putting a lot of money into gear over time.

avalanche beacon and probe?
shovel?
snoeshoes?
crampons?
tent?
sleeping bag?

As I said I'm pretty clueless so any input would be appreciated.  ;D Thanks

Depends on what you're looking to do... For day tours you can go without a tent and bag, of course.

Would be nice if you had the beacon, probe, and shovel though. Probe and shovel won't be much, but the beacon can be a bundle. Ask around if you can get a used one? Step and cheap sometimes has sales up to 40% off, which is nice.

Snowshoes, and even just booting may work - but won't be very fast and easy. If you are looking to climb straight up on steeper slopes - try Verts instead of snowsoes.

The big point, though, is to educate yourself and best - find some experienced people to show you the ropes. I know Ron J accepts newbies in his groups, contact him.

beacon,shovel, probe
splitboard, skins, 3-pc poles
sunglasses, goggles, sunscreen
hat, gloves, boots

things to stay away from:

skis, especially telemark
snowshoes
cowboy boots

on a more serious note, do you plan on BC skiing? or just hiking?

Map and compass skills are probably the most important thing above Paradise, GPS doesn't hurt either.

I defiantly plan on back country snowboarding. Ive always wanted to go and very happy to have a chance to do so. I think i'm just going to hold off on gear until I get up there. Then hopefully meet somebody who knows what they are doing. I can't really buy any gear down here anyway. Thank you both for the advice.

Defiantly is the only way.

Getting a splitboard makes the uphill more efficient and fun. Snowshoes work pretty well for spring and summer. If you plan on just making trips to Muir, there is usually a good bootpack and you can often get away without even snowshoes.

Check the gear for sale here and the Seattle area Craigslist. I have seen splitboard setups with skins for about $350. Most people are happy with something in the 160 to 165 cm range.

If you are based at Paradise, you can cover a lot of groung with day trips. If you are going overnight, you have to work hard to buy lightweight gear. Skiing with a pack over 50 lbs isn't much fun.
