This is a statement that I'd like to see backed up with some links to research, especially w/r/t the effects of noise on breeding/migratory/feeding patterns of wildlife.
I think the WMC makes a valid point that changes in both sno-mo technology and population pressure warrant renewed evaluation of environmental impact. In general, I'd simply like to see more land designated as Wilderness.

Exactly what I was thinking...... They don't manage snowmobiles the same as motorcycles and/or jeeps because there is very little, if any harm to the forest beyond noise and making tracks in the snow.

It was the winter of 68 and I'd just got out of the army and was ski bumming in Jackson Hole with all my old surfing buddies and me and Kingsnake were sitting up not far off of Rendezvous Bowl on a pretty clear day and we could see all the way down to the village and like a sort of pasture off to the left and we could hear this loud, terrible, out of place noise all the way up there and could see these guys on what we learned were snow mobiles and in that instant we said "what the f##k are those." And to this day that is still my reaction, a loathing for something like that as a recreational activity in a place where silence, is a part of the pristine beauty of a mountain's nature. Basicly they are a corporate induced mechanical object that has a place for service as a tool, but to be unleashed upon the masses for contaminating the wilderness is truly a sad state of the present.

That's the sum total of what I've said on the subject. I would much prefer if people controlled their own contributions, which most folks do without a problem. Occasional reminders seem to do the job, but in the event that it becomes more problematic or habitual I'll edit/delete posts -- I'd much rather not need to do that.

If we can ease off on the profanity, that would be great. Hiding it in $% etc doesn't make it any less obvious. Lots of kids/family, etc come here.
