Snowshoes but no AT gear was created by alpenbum
I am interested in hiking up the Alpy BC after the lifts close this spring. I have my beacon, shovel, probe, etc., but I don't have any AT gear.
I have read you can wear ski boots with MSR Denali's. Has anyone tried this?
It's not my preferred method of travel but I have what I have.
Thanks.
David

In my pre-AT days I would boot up Alpy and the Alpy BC in the spring without snowshoes. It's usually consolidated enough by then that it isn't an issue. Just watch out for signs of thin snow so you don't fall into any holes!
As far as snowshoes go, my boots fit into some old Tubbs, but they're pretty bulky and defintely not as good for walking on firm snow.

I assume that you have alpine gear. If so...Pick up a pair of the
Alpine Trekkers
.

You can use a variety of hiking boots with the Denalis; even logging boots; don't need a ski boot.

It is possible to hike in the snow without snowshoes once it's corn harvest time.
Just like JPH I once hiked around Alpental and it's BC in my running shoes. Even up to Bryant Col and Chair peak. An extra pair of dry socks for the decent was required. I have since come to my senses and purchased the gear.
It should be noted that hiking through spring snow is the best way to clean your shoes. At the end of the hike your tennis shoes will sparkle like new!

In spring when consolidated a few people use their running shoes with a slip on spiky things like yaktax.

I have one friend who calls them his "gaypons"!NTTIATWWT.
