Minimum headlamp power? was created by hyakSS
Newbie here, wondering what strength headlamp is usually needed for skinning and skiing in the dark? Any particular headlamp recommendations? I don't plan on skiing hi-speed at night, certainly. Just want to have a reasonably powered headlamp for those early morning approaches and fun night trips.
Thanks

my favorite is petzel tikka. it's reliable with four LED bulbs, three AAAs, two brightness settings and a strobe. it tilts on an elastic strap, good with a hat or a helmet. ~$30 at REI.

www.bikelights.com/stella200.html Can't say enough good things about this light, of course its really for biking through the night in dark forests but I have used it on some night trips skiing and its damn good.  Lasts all night and blinds drivers when I'm commuting on it.

My touring one is a BD Icon which I find pretty good, don't recommend a Petzl Tikka, not enough light in case you are wondering.

Recently found that this Icon doesn't fit under my ski helmet so that might be a turn off.

Plenty of options though.

Princeton Tec EOS is one of the brighter lights I've used. Much brighter than a Tikka for an ounce or two more. The Princeton Tec Apex Pro is a "big brother" of the EOS, with a more robust external battery pack -- comes highly recommended by some of my SAR friends if you really need a ton of light to work in, but probably overkill for day trips or recreational purposes.

Back in the day (love that over-used phrase), I had the Petzl Artic, it was great if you were route finding in the dark, think aid route or glacier, but way too heavy for most uses.

Then I was an early adopter of LED and went to the Tikka, it busted, case cracked. But as an advantage it shared the battery type & number with my beacon.

Now I used the Petzl e-Lite. It is crazy light and works well enough for skinning in the pre-dawn hours. If I was more of a bad-ass than I am I might get something brighter, but it's hard to beat this weight.
