No high speed at night? Why not? It's a blast and really no harder than skiing in daylight. I have a lot of friends who regularly night ski in Vermont, and all of them use lights with at least ~300 lumens output. Hiking / climbing lights are really not enough to ski aggressively at night, although they are fine for the way up. You want a mountain bike light. Mount it on your helmet and run a cable to a battery pack in your jacket. I have a Cygolite 350 dual beam LED model that works pretty well, but doesn't seem quite as bright as the numbers would suggest. There is apparently a ~$100 600-900 lumen LED model on dealxtreme. For the money, that is incredibly bright. Also, although they are hard to find, the color of the HID lights seems to work a bit better on snow than LED (halogen too, but it eats batteries).

Newbie here, wondering what strength headlamp is usually needed for skinning and skiing in the dark? Any particular headlamp recommendations? I don't plan on skiing hi-speed at night, certainly. Just want to have a reasonably powered headlamp for those early morning approaches and fun night trips.
Thanks

Well, I guess what I mean is that I am looking for an all around headlamp and wouldn't expect it to be enough for full on night skiing. I know of the dealextreme light of which you write. It's the magicshine. Last I saw, geoman, who is the main distributor, discontinued them due to some battery issues or something. They did look great.
