Printing Topo Question - What printer do you use?

So rather than be covered in maps, or run to REI every 12 seconds to plan a trip I generally print my route maps/plans out of National Geo Topo State. I have a plastic map sleeve so I don't bother with the waterproof paper. This has worked out great but it would be nice to have a little larger map. Just wondering what everyone out there uses to print out their own maps?

Looks like there are some cheap large format bubble jet printers out there. Thoughts?

I usually just print them on 8.5 * 11 standard paper from terrain navigator software, but add overlap between pages along the route.  I also pack them into a transparent plastic sleeve for waterproofing and so I can have a couple in view on opposite sides if it's a multi-day trip.  I do have (*some*) nostalgia for the big USGS foldable quad maps, but it always seemed like a route would span multiple maps.  And trying to fold up a big map in wind can be comical!

inkjet printer ink is typically water soluable. I usually just b/w laser print them.

If i want something nicer I'll color laser print them on 11x17 paper via FedEx Office / Kinkos and pick them up (many more locations than REI and more like $3 per sheet instead of $8)

remember a color inkjet printer is just marketing device for ink cartridges

I use NG TOPO software and print on 8.5x11. I print double sided with one side zoomed in on where I am touring and the other scaled out a bit for area overview. The NG waterproof adventure paper works great for this, but on some tours in fair weather to save on adventure paper I print on regular paper and put a couple copies in a zip lock in my pack. I have occasionally used the larger maps printed on the machine at REI... but my local REI got ride of the machine...

Since NG TOPO does not upload routes to my GPS, I have been using this web application to create routes and waypoints. GPSVisualizer . I cant get it to print exactly what I want, so I take a screenshot of the browser and print the saved image file. (You can minimize the tool boxes on the screen by clicking on them). I then save my work as a gpx file and upload it to my garmin.

Not sure if this helps but I down load these maps:

www.topoquest.com/find/state.php?state=WA&start=S
make what ever changes I need to in photoshop and print them out on a color laser. 12x18 if I can. If I'm at home I print them using "tile" so there on 4 or 6 sheet of 8.5x11 and tape them in to one using packing tape.

save the topo screen as a .jpeg and email to your local kinko's. they print full color 11x17's for 1.93 a pop. i usually laminate them and have them for long periods of time.

if you're feeling really savvy about the imaging size run it through photoshop and set the image size for 11x17 with 300dpi then save as .jpeg
